Lassies' Reply

You woo, you rhyme, you sing your song,
you tell us what we want to hear,
But lads, this has lasted far too long
Now you must lend an ear.

"To see her is to love her
love but her and love for ever"
We these words and think how clever!
We dare to hope he's taken a fancy,
but no my dears he wrote it for Nancy.

"Her brow is like the snowdrift
her throat is like a swan
her face it is the fairest
that e'er the sun shone on."
Words so gentle and so kind,
when he wrote them, was I on his mind?
But no again it was not me,
this song is for bonnie Annie Laurie.

"If you saw her you would fancy her as well
for she's as pure as a lily in the dell."
With fairy feet and voice so sweet the list is truly long,
it is for Nancy, Annie, and for Mary that you sing your song.

Lads, when you profess your love to us
take this advice from me
you need not walk 500 miles
need not lie down and die.
The only thing we ask of you
is tell us words so kind and true.
And when you say them be sincere
for when the lassie's heard them,
you'll have nothing more to fear.
